Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump on his inauguration, expressing openness to dialogue on pressing international issues like the Ukraine conflict and nuclear arms control.
Putin welcomed Trump’s desire to restore direct contacts with Russia and prevent World War Three, reflecting cautious optimism within Russia that Trump’s presidency could help repair strained ties between Washington and Moscow ¹.
However, Russian officials remain cautious, acknowledging that these expectations may not materialize. Putin reiterated Russia’s readiness to engage with the new US administration on security concerns, emphasizing the need for a long-term peace in Ukraine based on respect for all people’s legitimate interests.
The Russian leader also expressed willingness to discuss arms control, particularly with the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) set to expire on February 5, 2026.
While Trump has pledged to end the war in Ukraine, Putin has made it clear that any negotiations must recognize Russia’s territorial claims, which Ukraine has rejected as unacceptable.
