Matawalle Urges U.S. Collaboration to Tackle Nigeria’s Security Challenges.

Posted on May 1, 2025

Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has appealed to the United States for increased support in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and other security threats. Speaking during a meeting with Major General Garrick Harmon of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Matawalle emphasized the urgent need for enhanced intelligence sharing, military training, and logistical assistance.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja, marked General Harmon’s first official visit to Nigeria in his current role as Director for Strategy, Engagement, and Programs at AFRICOM.

Highlighting the importance of deepening defence cooperation, Matawalle said Nigeria remains committed to regional peace but requires greater backing from international allies to combat persistent security challenges, including insurgency and transnational crime.

“We need a stronger partnership with the U.S., particularly in the areas of intelligence and capacity building, if we are to tackle the evolving threats facing our country and the region,” the Minister stated.

In his remarks, Major General Harmon thanked Nigerian officials for their hospitality and reaffirmed Washington’s dedication to supporting West Africa’s security architecture. He noted that although his visit was brief, the discussions were meaningful and a testament to the robust relationship between the two nations.

Both sides agreed on the need for continued collaboration and pledged to strengthen ties to address mutual security concerns across the region.
