Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday visited Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, following a violent attack that claimed the lives of at least 75 residents.
The visit was carried out on the instruction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a statement by Shettima’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, who said the vice president was tasked with assessing the situation and delivering the federal government’s condolences to affected families.
Upon arrival, Shettima was received by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other senior government officials.
Governor AbdulRazaq had earlier described the victims as Muslims who were killed for rejecting extremist beliefs imposed by their attackers. While early reports put the death toll at over 100, official figures later confirmed 75 fatalities.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, reportedly followed an unsuccessful attempt by militants to forcibly indoctrinate members of the community.
Nkwocha said the vice president also conveyed President Tinubu’s assurances that those responsible would be brought to justice. “The Federal Government will not relent until the perpetrators are identified, arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
President Tinubu had previously condemned the assault on Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities, branding the killings as “cowardly and beastly.” He announced that an Army battalion had been deployed under Operation Savannah Shield to pursue the attackers and safeguard vulnerable communities.
The president further called for enhanced coordination between federal and state authorities to provide support for victims and ensure accountability for the attack.
