Nigerian forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman have pledged to channel the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup into success at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Osimhen apologised to Nigerians for the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify after losing to DR Congo in the play-offs but vowed the team would make amends at AFCON.
“AFCON is the opportunity for us to try to right our wrongs, to make Super Eagles fans around the world see what we can give,” the Galatasaray striker told PoojaMedia. “We are so sorry for not getting them the World Cup ticket. I know the disappointment on the faces of many Nigerians. Life goes on, and this AFCON is our chance to perform and aim to win the tournament.”
Regarded as one of Africa’s top forwards, Osimhen said the squad would “go to war” in the competition, starting with Tuesday’s opener against Tanzania. “It’s all about going to war. Tuesday is the first match, and we will give everything. We respect all teams in our group, but we are among the favourites in this tournament,” he added in an interview with Kelechi Anyikude.
Lookman shared a similar message, telling Elegbete TV Sports that the team must convert their World Cup setback into motivation. “The disappointment affects all of us and the nation. Hopefully, we can turn that pain into something positive, a powerful drive for success,” the Atalanta winger said. “My focus is on performing, helping the team in Morocco, and bringing glory home. Last time, we came close in Abidjan but didn’t win, so keeping the unity we have in the squad is vital.”
Nigeria will face Tanzania at the Complexe Sportif de Fes on Tuesday, aiming to secure all three points. The teams last met at AFCON in 1980, when Nigeria won 3-1 on their way to claiming their first continental title.
