The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the sub-region in response to worsening security challenges and a renewed wave of coups.
ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, announced the decision on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja.
The declaration comes after a series of military takeovers, attempted coups, and escalating instability in several member states. Touray said the current situation demands “serious introspection on the future of our democracy and an urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”
Tuesday’s meeting was convened to assess the growing threats to peace and political stability and to coordinate regional efforts to address them.
