President Bola Tinubu has expressed relief over the safe release of the 24 schoolgirls abducted by terrorists in Maga, Kebbi State, last Monday.
The attackers invaded the school at dawn on November 17, shortly after a military team had departed, and took the girls away. The incident triggered similar kidnappings in Eruku, Kwara State, and Papiri, Niger State.
All 38 victims abducted in Eruku were confirmed freed on Sunday. On the same day, the Niger State chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria announced that 50 of the missing students from the Catholic school in Niger had returned home.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended security agencies for their efforts in securing the release of the abducted girls and other victims. He also urged them to intensify operations to rescue those still in captivity.
“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must urgently deploy more personnel to vulnerable areas to prevent further kidnappings,” Tinubu said, as quoted by Onanuga.
The President added that his administration would provide all necessary support to strengthen ongoing security operations.
