The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces while carrying out their lawful duties.
Abubakar made this known on Wednesday during a press briefing at the National Defence College, Abuja, to kick-start activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
“At the ministry, and indeed within the armed forces, we will always stand by our officers on lawful duty,” he said. “Rest assured that any officer performing his duties responsibly will be protected. I will not allow anything to happen to any officer doing his job and doing it credibly well.”
His remarks followed Tuesday’s confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and some soldiers who reportedly prevented him and his entourage from gaining access to a parcel of land in the Gaduwa district of Abuja.
The FCT Minister, visibly displeased by the soldiers’ action, questioned their authority and insisted that no one is above the law, alleging that proper procedures were not followed in the development of the disputed land.
