The Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths recorded in a tragic boat accident that claimed 26 lives on the River Niger.

The accident occurred on Tuesday evening, September 30, 2025, when traders traveling from Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State to Ilushi Market in neighboring Edo State were involved in a mishap mid-river.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed that the death toll had risen to 26, describing the incident as a devastating loss.

“Reports indicate that the unfortunate incident has claimed the lives of not less than 26 passengers. This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, as well as the entire Ibaji Local Government Area, in this moment of grief,” the statement read.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, in his condolence message, directed the State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies to work closely with local authorities to provide immediate support and relief for affected families.

He further assured that the government would intensify its collaboration with federal agencies to strengthen safety measures on waterways and prevent future tragedies.

The governor also urged riverine communities to prioritize safety during water travel, stressing the importance of avoiding overloading and the use of life jackets and other precautionary measures.

“The Government of Kogi State stands with the people of Ibaji LGA and will continue to support them through this difficult time,” Ododo said.
