Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, has inaugurated the National Energy Masterplan Implementation Committee (NEMiC), tasked with leading Nigeria’s shift to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
The inauguration, held on September 18 in Abuja, marks the full rollout of the National Energy Masterplan (NEMP)—a framework designed to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix, boost energy security, and align with global climate goals.
According to a statement by Dr. Robert Ngwu, Senior Special Adviser to the Minister, NEMiC will mobilise funding, expand renewable energy infrastructure, and fast-track the adoption of technologies that improve access to affordable and reliable power. The committee will also operationalise the National Energy Fund to finance energy efficiency and infrastructure projects.
Speaking at the event, Nnaji stressed that the plan must deliver tangible results:
“The National Energy Masterplan is not just a document; it is a blueprint for transforming our energy landscape. NEMiC must fast-track energy solutions that are reliable, affordable, and climate-friendly.”
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Chief Executive of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and Chairman of NEMiC, presented the committee’s implementation roadmap to the Minister, outlining steps to achieve the Masterplan’s ambitious targets.
Nnaji pledged full government support, assuring policy backing and an enabling environment for success. Development partners, private investors, and international organisations, including UNDP and UNIDO, attended the ceremony to signal their commitment.
Stakeholders described the move as strategic, given that over 80 million Nigerians still lack reliable electricity while more than 90 per cent of households depend on biomass for cooking. They noted that the plan could unlock new economic opportunities while accelerating universal energy access.
Prominent attendees included representatives from global engineering firms, financial institutions, the Presidential CNG Initiative, and leading Nigerian business figures.
Nnaji closed on a note of confidence:
“The decisions and actions of this committee will define Nigeria’s energy trajectory for decades. This is a responsibility of the highest order, and I am confident NEMiC has the capacity, vision, and commitment to rise to the occasion.”
