Former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has broken his silence after being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure.
Kyari, who arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, was grilled by investigators on allegations of conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.
Addressing reporters briefly after the session, he said:
“I have done my part; the EFCC must do theirs. When each of us does our duty without fear or favour, with honour, respect, and commitment, Nigeria moves forward.”
His appearance follows ongoing investigations into his financial dealings. In August, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered a temporary freeze on four Jaiz Bank accounts allegedly linked to him. The EFCC had requested a 60-day freeze, but the court granted 30 days, with the option of renewal.
The ruling came after the EFCC, acting on a petition filed by civil society group Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law on April 24, alleged that Kyari engaged in conspiracy, abuse of office, and money laundering.
Kyari, who oversaw the transition of the state oil firm from NNPC to NNPCL, has so far refrained from detailed comments on the allegations, insisting the EFCC should be allowed to complete its work.
The matter has been adjourned to September 23 for an update on the investigation. While the EFCC has not confirmed if charges will be filed, sources say the probe is ongoing and the freeze order may be extended if necessary.
Kyari, first appointed NNPC GMD in 2019 and retained as head of NNPCL after its commercialisation, left office in July 2025.
