Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has accused the federal government of attempting to steer Nigeria towards a one-party system.
Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Rhodes-Vivour urged Nigerians and opposition politicians to resist what he described as a deliberate effort to stifle political plurality.
According to him, opposition parties across the country are increasingly facing violent disruptions whenever they attempt to meet or mobilise.
“From Kaduna to Gombe, and even in Lagos yesterday, opposition gatherings are being violently attacked,” he said. “When you look at how politics is being played, it appears both the federal and state governments are working towards establishing a one-party state.
“If Nigerians and political actors do not resist this trend, what assurance is there that elections will even hold in the future?” he asked.
