El-Rufai Urges INEC to Adopt Electronic Voting, Real-Time Result Transmission for 2027

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fully embrace electronic voting and real-time transmission of results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai made the call on Friday, September 5, 2025, during an interactive session in Owerri, themed “Moving Forward Together.” He argued that Nigeria had no reason to retain an electoral system vulnerable to human interference when technology could ensure transparency.

Citing Kaduna State’s local government elections in 2018 and 2021, he said the successful use of electronic voting proved its feasibility. According to him, INEC has ample time to build the infrastructure required for nationwide deployment before 2027.

“Can we not agree to say farewell to electoral malfeasance by adopting electronic voting and real-time transmission of results to collation points without interference? I see no compelling argument or unbridgeable barrier to adopting this system for the 2027 elections,” he stated.

El-Rufai explained that electronic voting machines could authenticate voters, generate a verifiable paper trail, shut down automatically at the close of polls, print results for stakeholders, and transmit outcomes directly to collation centers.

He emphasized that the system would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and curb electoral malpractice. Recalling his experience as governor, he noted that his party lost some council seats under electronic voting but accepted the results, stressing that political will remains the only obstacle to nationwide adoption.
