The Kano State Hisbah Board has unveiled plans to sponsor the weddings of youths who recently renounced thuggery and embraced peaceful living.
Commander-General of Hisbah, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this after more than 1,000 youths surrendered their weapons and publicly abandoned violence.
“This initiative is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s programme to reintegrate repentant youths into society and help them live responsibly,” Daurawa said, while cautioning the beneficiaries to ensure their repentance is genuine. He also urged other youths still involved in crime to seize the opportunity.
The event, held at the Police Headquarters in Bompai, was attended by Governor Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya. Waiya explained that the police screening marked the first stage of the rehabilitation process, which will be followed by further assessments from the NDLEA to verify sincerity.
The governor further announced that the state government would support the repentant youths with start-up funds, vocational skills training, and opportunities for formal education for those interested.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, described the exercise as evidence of the government’s commitment to tackling crime while offering young people a second chance at life.
Meanwhile, youth leaders such as Kamilu and Buzu Mai Kidan Gangi expressed appreciation to the government and stakeholders for encouraging their decision to turn a new leaf.
