AEC Unity Network Limited says it is optimistic that construction work on the proposed 470-kilometre Abuja–Lagos Superhighway will commence soon, a project expected to drastically cut travel time between Nigeria’s two busiest cities.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, the company’s Chairman, Dr. Kenny Martins, described the $4 billion initiative as a landmark development that would provide a safer, faster, and more reliable alternative to existing road networks.
According to him, the superhighway is being designed for vehicles to run at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, significantly reducing travel hours.
“This is more than just a road. The Abuja–Lagos Superhighway is a transformational infrastructure project that will change the way people and goods move between the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos. It will also open up rural communities, create jobs, and unlock new economic opportunities along its corridor,” Martins said.
The project will traverse Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the FCT, with additional links to Ondo State and Baro Port in Niger State to boost regional trade and logistics.
Martins noted that once completed, the superhighway would ease congestion on current routes while reducing the cost and stress of transporting commuters and cargo.
He further disclosed that the project is being executed in partnership with the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and the Federal Ministry of Works under the supervision of Minister Dave Umahi.
“This road is not just for today but for future generations. By the grace of God, very soon Nigerians will be driving on this superhighway,” he assured.
