The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured a place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a thrilling 2-1 victory over South Africa on Tuesday in Morocco. A dramatic stoppage-time goal from defender Michelle Alozie sealed the win in a pulsating semifinal clash.
With the game seemingly headed for extra time, Alozie launched a speculative long ball into the South African box in the 94th minute. The delivery sailed past everyone—including the goalkeeper—and nestled into the net, stunning the Banyana Banyana defence and sending the Nigerian bench into wild celebration.
The semifinal had been billed as a titanic battle between two WAFCON heavyweights—defending champions South Africa and record nine-time winners Nigeria—and it did not disappoint.
Nigeria started the match on the front foot, creating several early chances. However, the South African backline held firm, with a goal-line clearance and key saves keeping the score goalless.
The breakthrough came just before halftime. In the 44th minute, Rasheedat Ajibade converted from the penalty spot after a South African defender was penalized for handling a cross from Folashade Ijamilusi. Ajibade’s goal gave Nigeria a 1–0 lead going into the break.
South Africa responded strongly after halftime, piling pressure on the Nigerian defence. Their persistence paid off in the 56th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul by Osinachi Ohale. Linda Motlhalo stepped up and confidently equalized for Banyana Banyana.
As the clock ticked down, both teams made attacking substitutions in search of a winner. Just when extra time seemed inevitable, Esther Okoronkwo set up Michelle Alozie, whose decisive strike in the dying seconds snatched victory for the Super Falcons.
With the win, Nigeria advances to the final, remaining on course to claim a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. They will face either hosts Morocco or regional rivals Ghana in the championship match.
