ADC Denies Endorsing Presidential Candidate as Coalition Gains Momentum

Posted on July 9, 2025

by Nigerian News24 Correspondents

Senator David Mark, Interim Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has denied claims that the party has a preferred presidential candidate for 2027. This follows speculation linking Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi to the party’s ticket. Mark emphasized that all members are equal stakeholders and that the party aims to build a credible platform for Nigerians.

The denial comes after ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, accused the leadership of bias toward Atiku. Mark assured transparency, stating that the coalition seeks to rescue Nigeria from poor governance.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s adviser Bayo Onanuga alleged that opposition elements were conspiring to destabilize the government. He praised Tinubu’s reforms despite hardships, referencing a past warning by Emir Sanusi about difficult economic changes.

The ADC coalition has seen significant defections from PDP and APC members across states including Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, and Ondo. Notable joiners include former PDP senatorial and gubernatorial candidates, as well as party executives.

In Gombe, ex-APC official Abdullahi Ataka cited ADC’s clear direction and inclusiveness. In Jigawa, former Deputy Governor Ahmed Gumel now leads the new ADC executive. In Ondo, ex-PDP figures such as Eyitayo Jegede and Agboola Ajayi were reportedly involved, though the PDP denies any formal defection.

The PDP maintains it remains strong in the South-West and FCT, warning members against anti-party activities. Meanwhile, the Federal Government insists President Tinubu remains focused on reforms, not distracted by political maneuvering.

In response to the coalition’s momentum, APC accused the ADC of spreading falsehoods and lacking vision, calling its leaders opportunistic. The ruling party dismissed claims of interference, insisting the ADC’s internal struggles are self-inflicted.

Additionally, the ADC revealed that 97 lawyers are ready to defend the party in court against a suit challenging its interim leadership, alleging the APC is behind the legal move using non-members’ names.
