Tension has resurfaced in Taraba State following a violent confrontation between Tiv farmers and Fulani herders in the Bali Local Government Area. The latest outbreak of communal violence has left several people injured and resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of naira.
According to local reports, the clash originated from a dispute at a communal water pond located between the villages of Tor Bali and Atongo. Both communities depend heavily on the pond for daily water use.
The conflict reportedly began when a woman fetching water at the pond confronted Fulani herders for allowing their cattle to contaminate the water. An altercation ensued, during which the woman was allegedly attacked. Her cries for help drew the attention of other villagers, sparking a broader and more violent conflict between the two groups.
Confirming the incident, Bali LGA Chairman Aboki Dauda described the situation as tragic. “Homes were set ablaze, and many people were displaced. Fortunately, we have not recorded any deaths so far,” he stated.
Dauda added that local authorities have intervened by meeting with leaders of the Fulani herding community, issuing firm warnings to prevent further escalation. “We’ve identified those behind the attack and have made it clear to their leaders that any recurrence will attract serious consequences,” he said.
Eyewitness accounts highlight the severity of the violence. Ezekiel Gboo, a farmer from Tor Bali, shared his harrowing experience: “We were working on the farm when we were suddenly surrounded. They attacked us with sticks and cutlasses. I tried to escape but was caught and beaten by around 30 men.”
In response to the unrest, the Taraba State Government dispatched a delegation led by Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs, Saviour Noku, to the conflict zone. The team provided emergency relief materials and urged communities to embrace peace.
“Let us all strive to coexist peacefully,” Noku told residents. “Resolving disputes without violence is always the better path. What we’re offering now is short-term assistance, but we are committed to supporting your full recovery and resettlement.”
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts are underway to restore calm in the affected communities.
