Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, a public holiday in honour of 22 athletes and officials who tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival.
The fatal crash occurred along the Kano–Zaria Expressway, claiming the lives of members of the Kano State sports delegation, including athletes, coaches, and officials who had proudly represented the state in various sporting events.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf expressed profound grief over the tragedy, describing it as a “dark moment” for Kano State.
“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured. On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief,” the statement read.
Despite being in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj operations, Governor Yusuf directed that the public holiday be observed to allow citizens time to mourn, offer prayers, and show solidarity with the affected families.
He further called on imams and members of the Muslim community within and outside Kano State to offer special prayers for the departed souls and for healing for the injured.
The governor also pledged that the state government would provide comprehensive support to the victims’ families and those recovering from injuries sustained in the accident.
“This is a moment of collective sorrow. We urge the good people of Kano to remain calm, united, and prayerful during this period of mourning,” Yusuf added.
