A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced social media influencer Murja Kunya to six months in prison for abusing the Nigerian currency, the Naira.
Justice Simone Amobeda delivered the verdict on Wednesday after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured her conviction. Kunya, known for her controversial TikTok content, was arrested for spraying and mishandling Naira notes during a visit to Tahir Guest Palace in Kano—an act that violates the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
The EFCC initially arrested Kunya in January 2025 and granted her administrative bail. However, she fled to evade prosecution, prompting a weeks-long manhunt before her re-arrest on March 16, 2025.
When arraigned on May 20, Kunya pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge, leading to her sentencing. The case highlights the EFCC’s continued crackdown on Naira abuse, particularly by public figures and social media personalities.
