A high-profile political coalition meeting in Abuja descended into chaos on Sunday after a dispute over state representation led to a dramatic disruption by delegates from Jigawa State.
The meeting, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel and convened by the National Political Consultative Group (North), brought together key political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Tensions flared when former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, introduced a delegate to speak on behalf of Jigawa State. This move was immediately rejected by several Jigawa delegates, who stormed the stage in protest, blocking the individual from addressing the gathering and insisting they would not accept imposed representation.
The disruption prompted swift intervention from security operatives, including personnel from the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and private security, who formed a protective cordon around key political figures to prevent escalation.
Order was eventually restored after several minutes of appeals and negotiations. A compromise was reached, allowing Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, alongside another chosen delegate, to represent the state in the discussions.
The incident underscores the deep sensitivities surrounding representation and unity efforts among opposition leaders as they seek to form a broad-based coalition ahead of future political realignments.
