Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over Insecurity in Borno, Urges Urgent Federal Action
ABUJA — Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has voiced deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Borno State, particularly in the conflict-ridden Marte region. In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi called for immediate federal intervention to support local efforts and prevent further loss of life and territory.
Describing the developments in Marte as “a national alarm bell,” Obi warned that the situation goes beyond a local crisis and must be addressed with urgency. He expressed dismay that the region continues to suffer devastating attacks while federal support remains inadequate.
Obi also commended Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his bold leadership, highlighting the governor’s decision to personally visit and spend the night in the embattled area as a powerful act of solidarity with his people.
“Governor Zulum has once again exemplified what responsive leadership should look like—present, courageous, and committed,” Obi wrote. “His actions serve as a challenge to those in authority to act with equal resolve.”
He criticized the federal government for its slow response to growing threats in the region, noting that over 300 communities are vulnerable and more than 20,000 people have been displaced. He echoed Zulum’s recent warnings about insurgents regrouping near Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, stressing that the opportunity for effective action is rapidly closing.
“This is not a time for promises—it is a time for protection,” Obi urged. “Delayed responses and distant governance are putting lives at risk. The federal government must deploy reinforcements and take decisive steps to support security forces on the ground.”
Obi emphasized that the issue transcends politics, calling it a matter of national survival. “If we fail to protect Borno, we fail the very idea of Nigeria,” he stated.
He concluded by urging Nigerian leaders to rise to the occasion, saying, “Nigeria thrives when guided by compassion, competence, and courage. Governor Zulum has shown this. Now the federal government must follow suit.”
