The Nasarawa State Government has confirmed the receipt of a N9.75 billion refund from the Federal Government, following the transfer of the former Lafia Cargo Airport to federal control.
Governor Abdullahi Sule made the announcement on Monday during a special stakeholder meeting at the Government House in Lafia. He revealed that the refund came after persistent efforts by his administration to reclaim the funds, following the 2022 federal takeover of the airport, now renamed Usman Dan Fodio Airport.
Governor Sule convened the meeting to thank stakeholders—including members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and key government officials—who played instrumental roles in securing the reimbursement. He also said the gathering would provide an opportunity to discuss how best to utilize the recovered funds.
Outlining the meeting’s agenda, the governor highlighted three key items, starting with the airport’s handover and its significance for the state.
“I must express deep appreciation to His Excellency, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, for initiating the construction of the Lafia Cargo Airport, a project that has greatly enhanced our state’s investment potential,” he said.
Governor Sule recalled that the airport was completed and commissioned in 2022, with discussions on federal management already underway at the time. He credited several ministries and legislators—including Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu and the House member representing Awe/Doma/Keana Federal Constituency—for their contributions to achieving the refund.
He also disclosed that the state government had originally pursued the refund to complete the Kwandere–Sabongida Road project, another initiative started under former Governor Al-Makura.
“Our goal was to use the N9.75 billion to finish the Kwandere–Sabongida Road. It’s unfortunate that the funds were only released last week, but we’re grateful nonetheless,” he said. “It took tremendous effort, and I commend everyone—from federal lawmakers to ministries and elders—who played a role in this success.”
In addition, Governor Sule announced the technical completion of the over N16 billion Lafia Flyover and Underpass projects, which were initiated by his administration. He noted that while a few minor works remain, the infrastructure is ready for immediate use.
“The underpass and flyover were technically completed yesterday, meaning they are now open for use,” he stated.
He invited stakeholders to join him in symbolically opening the road for public use ahead of its official commissioning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, scheduled for June.
“We want to open it now for a trial period so that any issues, like potential cracks, can be identified and fixed before the official launch,” he added.
