Deputy Senate President Calls for National Law to Regulate Hunters’ Activities
Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has emphasized the urgent need for a national law to regulate the activities of hunters across Nigeria, following recent security concerns involving hunting communities.
Speaking on Tuesday while seconding a motion introduced by Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila for the establishment of such a bill, Senator Jibrin pointed to the tragic killings in Uromi as a clear example of the consequences of unregulated hunting practices.
“The Uromi killings sparked nationwide outrage,” Jibrin said. “It cut across religious and regional lines — from the South to the North, from Muslims to Christians. Everyone was affected.”
He recalled personally visiting the families of victims in the Kano South Senatorial District, where he donated N16 million in support and pledged to pursue justice for the victims.
“What’s most important now is ensuring the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice. It’s the only way to prevent such crimes in the future,” he said.
Jibrin also commended Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for leading collaborative efforts with security agencies to apprehend the culprits, which he said helped ease national tensions.
Explaining the role of traditional hunters, Jibrin noted, “These are professional hunters, common in northern Nigeria, who travel to hunt wild animals and return to sell them. It was during such a hunting trip that the unfortunate incident occurred.”
He concluded by stressing the need to fast-track the proposed legislation to formalize and regulate hunting in Nigeria, noting that hunting is a globally recognized tradition that must be managed properly to avoid security challenges.
