Trump Says He’s Not Pursuing a Third Term, Cites Constitutional Limits
U.S. President Donald Trump has clarified that he is not considering a third presidential term, citing constitutional restrictions. Speaking in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press as part of his media outreach marking the first 100 days of his second term, the 76-year-old former president addressed questions about his political future.
“I’m not looking at that,” Trump said, referring to the possibility of running again in 2028. “So many people want me to do it. But it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.”
The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment explicitly prohibits any individual from being elected to the presidency more than twice. Trump acknowledged this, though he questioned the constitutional basis for the restriction, saying he wasn’t entirely sure about its legality.
During the interview, Trump deflected blame for the current economic downturn and remained ambiguous about whether constitutional limits would constrain aspects of his immigration agenda, particularly mass deportations.
Despite speculation and past suggestions that he might seek another term beyond 2028, Trump emphasized his focus is on delivering “four great years” and eventually handing over leadership to “a great Republican” successor.
