Man Kills Mother Over Cassava Business Dispute in Anambra

Posted on April 14, 2025

AWKA – A 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, has been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother, Dorathy Anyaji, with an axe following a dispute over proceeds from their cassava business.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Amudo Village, Ekwulobia, at about 2 p.m. According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect attacked his mother after accusing her of dishonesty in managing the business finances.

After committing the crime, Nnamdi reportedly attempted suicide but was overpowered and arrested by police operatives. An axe, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered at the scene.

Ikenga stated, “Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect accused his late mother of misappropriating money from their cassava trade, leading to the violent altercation.”

The suspect is currently in police custody under close watch to prevent self-harm and will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.

12 Suspects Arrested for Drug Offenses in Separate Raid

In a related development, police also arrested 12 young men in Enugu-Ukwu for alleged possession of illicit substances during a Friday raid.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 29, were identified as: Ifeanyi Bernard, Emmanuel Ugwu, Thankgod Kelechi, Umeh Chidera, Aguiyi Onyeka, Onyeka Martin, Festus Ihezie, Chibundu Nicholas, Solomon Obiefule, Chibundu Daniel, Neke Shedrack and Nwazufu Kingsley.

They have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating crime and ensuring public safety, urging residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
