A massive fire outbreak has ravaged sections of the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, Nigeria, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. The blaze, which began at approximately 6:20 am on Friday, quickly spread to adjacent buildings, fueled by strong winds and closely packed stalls.
Eyewitnesses report that residents, passersby, and firefighters are working tirelessly to salvage properties and goods from the affected buildings. The scene is one of utter devastation, with charred remains of buildings, burnt-out stalls, and scattered debris littering the area.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, but officials suspect that it may have been sparked by an electrical fault or arson. An investigation into the incident has been launched, and authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and urged the public to remain calm. “Our firefighters deployed immediately upon receiving the distress call at 6:20 am,” Chiketa stated. “We are working to bring the situation under control and prevent further damage.”
The Anambra State Fire Service has deployed multiple units to the scene, including firefighting trucks, ambulances, and rescue teams. Officials are also working to provide support and assistance to affected traders and residents.
The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, but initial reports suggest that several buildings and stalls have been destroyed, with many more damaged. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety and security of markets in the state.
The Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest and busiest markets in Nigeria, attracting traders and customers from all over the country. The fire outbreak has not only caused significant material damage but has also disrupted economic activities in the area.
As the situation continues to unfold, officials are urging the public to remain calm and to cooperate with emergency responders. The Anambra State Government has also promised to provide support and assistance to affected traders and residents.
