The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is demanding an immediate reversal of the recent fuel price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), stating that it has made life harder for Nigerians. The NNPCL raised the price of petrol from 568 to 855 or 897 Naira per liter, depending on the location, amidst ongoing fuel scarcity in the country.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, criticized the Federal Government for betraying the labor movement and called for the fuel price increase to be reversed. He also demanded the release of those arrested during recent protests, an end to arbitrary arrests, a halt to the electricity tariff hike, and a stop to the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s duties being taken over.
Ajaero expressed concern about the government’s failure to implement the new national minimum wage of 70,000 Naira and described the current administration’s policies as traumatic. He mentioned a previous offer from President Bola Tinubu to labor leaders, which they rejected due to its negative impact on Nigerians.
Ajaero highlighted the government’s lack of sincerity and criticized its handling of fuel subsidy issues. He also mentioned broken promises regarding the electricity tariff hike and expressed disappointment that the situation has only worsened for Nigerians and businesses.
